Lotus Engineering Software has been developed by automotive engineers whilst using them on many powertrain and vehicle projects at Lotus over the past 15 years. Lotus Concept Valve Train uses template driven data entry to design cam profiles. The motion can be specified from either the cam or valve end of the mechanism. Motion definition is via segmented polynomials with user controlled levels of derivative definition. On-screen results show the profile summary compared to user-definable design limits. The four available mechanism templates cover the majority of conventional valve train systems. Template types are 'Direct Acting', 'Centre Pivot Rocker', 'Finger Follower' and 'Push Rod'. The dynamic analysis mode enables both mechanical of hydraulic tappets to be simulated. Single- or twin-coil mechanical spring models are available, together with a gas spring model which includes mass transfer and variable gas properties. A range of profile definition methods is available. Three standard segmented polynomials provide solutions for typical design including eccentricity-limited profiles and concavity limited profiles. In addition a user-defined polynomial is available with complete control over the number of segments and end constraints. Each segment can have additional mid points the values for which can also be defined in lift or any chosen derivative.

Lotus Suspension Analysis provides a simple to use tool for the design and analysis of suspension geometry. Standard suspension types using indivdual default pre-filled templates provide easy creation of kinematic model, in either 2D or 3D modes. Lotus Suspension Analysis default template types include, double wishbones, Macpherson struts, trailing arm, semi-trailing arm, pull rod and push rod damper actuation, 'A' frame and 'H' frame. Users can create and distribute their own unique templates. Kinematic results include camber angle, castor angle, toe, kingpin angle, roll centre position, damper ratio, spring ratio, track change, wheelbase change, % anti squat, % anti dive and % Ackermann. The suspension hard points can be picked on screen and simply edited to review changes to the suspension characteristics. Alternative approaches can be used to point editing through on screen dragging. Picking a point and dragging it along one or more axes, the graphical results being updated as you move the point. Points can be moved as a 'group' such that the dimensional relationship of a wishbone can be retained.

Lotus Vehicle Simulation provides rapid answers to vehicle performance questions. Virtual vehicles can be put through a range of simulated events including: steady speed operation; acceleration events; emissions cycles; laps of a course. The program can be used to optimise gear and final drive ratios, assess fuel economy sensitvity, and assess powertrain suitability in given vehicle applications.
